The most common use of this solution is in a manganese-dioxide primary cell with potassium hydroxide as an electrolyte. During cell discharge, the oxygen-rich manganese dioxide is reduced and the zinc becomes oxidized while ions are being transported through the conductive alkaline electrolyte.
